Graphic Novel Review: DC Comics Green Lantern Re-Birth

Hal Jordan was the Green Lantern of Earth and the entire Sector 2814. His hometown of Coast City was destroyed and it residents killed due to the evil schemes of the alien Mongul. In an attempt to bring back the his hometown and its residents, Hal abused his power as a Green Lantern and turned evil. He then took the name Parallax and attempted to re-create the Universe according to his liking. But he sacrificed his life in order to save Earth and went on to roam the face of Earth as part of the vengeance seeking entity known as the Spectre.

On his journey from the outer edges of the Universe, current Green Lantern Kyle Rayner discovered something about the entity of fear known as Parallax, a name which was once held by his predecessor Hal Jordan. With this information, he travels back to Earth. Meanwhile, Hal Jordan tries to experience the life he once has despite the struggle of having the Spectre having a control over him. Aside from that, his evil personality as Parallax also tries to have an influence over them. Hints of Hal’s re-appearance sends the Justice League in an alert, still recollecting of the dangers he had possessed when he turned evil. As Kyle sets foot back on Earth, it sends off a strange manipulation on the Green Lanterns in Earth: Kilowog, John, Stewart, and Guy Gardner until Ganthet released them from their control. Later on the real Parallax, the entity of fear, made its existence known to the combined forces of the Justice League, Justice Society of America, and the rest of Earth’s superheroes. It is now up to the Guardian Ganthet, and Green Lanterns Kilowog, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, and the returning Hal Jordan to use all the willpower that they have and overcome fear and have the light of Green burn even brighter.

The entire story was about the return of Hal Jordan into the super hero character that he was more known as. The story also explained other details in the Green Lantern mythology, specifically, about the entity of fear known as Parallax. For me, the inclusion of DC’s great superheroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman into the story added impact in the bearing of the event. Also the resurface of an old villain Sinestro was something good as he was most known as the anti-thesis to Hal Jordan’s super hero status. Not to overlook was the great art that made reading the book much more enjoyable.

A good story that had a big impact in the DC Universe timeline, specifically into the Green Lantern Corps. Hal Jordan’s character shift from good to evil and his absence from having a super hero status, for me, was a sad event in comic history. Hal, to me, belongs in the same league as Bruce Wayne being Batman, Clark Kent being Superman, and Barry Allen being the Flash. Even though Kyle Rayner took on and kept the Green Light shining, Hal as a superhero was something that should have never ended before. Though it was always good to have something changed in order to entice the interest of readers, referring to his transformation from hero to villain, Hal Jordan’s comeback as a Green Lantern is really something great.

The JUSTICE Card in the Rider Waite Smith Deck of Tarot Cards

In the Justice card in the Rider Waite Smith deck of Tarot Cards, you can see a figure in long red and green robes, seated between two pillars, with a veil behind. The figure is wearing a crown and is holding a sword in one hand and a set of scales in the other hand.

This is a powerful card and the person drawing it needs to have strength and courage in whatever they are undertaking.

Colours of the Justice Card

The Colours are mostly strong red, which is the colour of external power. The green cloak represents compassion and love, which are also important in matters of justice.

The curtain behind is a deep purple, which is a mixture of strong red, representing the material outer world and blue, which is a colour of inner emotions.

Symbols of the Justice Card

The sword is double-edged and as such can fall in either direction. The scales of justice suggest balance and fairness. The Crown represents authority of some sort, mostly in the external world. The pillars represent duality and balance and the veil between them indicates that there is much more to this person or this situation than is being revealed.

Meaning of the Justice Card Upright

This can be a legal or official situation for someone. It may be to do with mediation or discussions and may or may not involve courts. The person may need to seek advice from someone who is balanced and impartial in their advice.

Unless indicated otherwise by surrounding cards, the situation will usually turn out for the highest and best good. The phrase “Justice will be done” comes to mind, although that may or may not be in favour of the person drawing this card.

As a person, it can be pointing to someone who has a real sense of justice and fairness and a huge desire to champion the underdog, or to support a cause they have a complete passion for.

There may be a need to look at your situation and ask yourself whether you are being really objective and balanced in your approach.

This is a card of logic. There is no place for emotion with this card.

Meaning of the Justice Card Reversed

The Meaning of the Justice Reversed is an injustice or a miscarriage of Justice or someone who is not being fair or objective in their dealings. They may be trying to misuse their power or authority or trying to bully others by threats of legal proceedings. The scales of Justice can tip either way and, although you would hope that the proceedings would be based on logic, that is not always the case.

In the Reversed position, the figure is propped up on her his or her sword and so runs a great risk of falling on it and doing themselves some serious damage.

You can now prominently see the yellow sun at the bottom of the card. Yellow is the colour of the solar plexus and can be the centre of the ego. If the Reversed card points to a miscarriage of Justice, it may be that the root cause is ego and personal prejudice.

If the Justice Reversed points to legal and official matters, it may not necessarily be the case that the decision has been incorrect, however the person asking the question is likely to feel very strongly that they have been severely wronged.

The surrounding cards will probably give a lot more information as to what has happened and what needs to be done in way of next steps.

History of the Green Lantern and His Ring

The Green Lantern is one of DC Comics’ first super heroes characters. His first appearance was in 1940 in the All-American Comics #16 as engineer. Alan Scott who was created and drawn by Martin Nodell with writer Bill Finger. The Green Lantern was a contemporary Aladdin who wore a magical ring which could conjure up anything the GL could think of. He was dressed in green and red and known as the Golden Age. He quickly became one of All-American Publications most popular and admired super heroes earning his own series, publishing numerous times a year beginning in 1941 and ending in 1949.

The first super hero team to welcome the Green Lantern was the Justice Society of America. Because Alan Scott earned his own series, something Flash did as well, he became an honorary member. Alan Scott as the Green Lantern appeared on several covers as well as Flash and Wonder Woman who were among fellow Justice Society members and the most popular of the gang from the publishers. The All-American Comics soon merged with another company, National Comics who published the likes of Batman and Superman.

Alan Scott was re-imagined as test pilot Hal Jordan in 1959 and was part of the Corps – a space based police association under the direction of the Guardians of the Universe. The Guardians were little blue men wearing red robes that held vast mental knowledge and powers who were placed in charge of protecting the enormous Corps on their planet, Oa.

Hal Jordan joined up with the premier Justice League of America and became one of the most popular characters the company had. In addition, Green Lantern had one of the most complex set of secondary characters and villains the company created. By introducing more members in the Corps, the DC Comics were able to interchange and come up with new and additional GL Corps and more villains for them to battle, such as John Stewart and Kyle Rayner who each battle their own demon or villain for the sake of good verses evil.

Every time a member needs to ‘recharge’ himself, he must go back to the main lantern to get more power for his ring which helps him fight the bad guys. It is no longer a ‘wishing’ type ring. It helps the Lantern fight evil and danger to protect the citizens of wherever he might be, and the source of the giant green lantern is on the planet Oa.

DC Comics have made the Corps somewhat of an enigma and therefore more people know of the actual lantern Corps that they carry with them or the rings than what they do and why. Their world is very complicated and sometimes hard to explain but true fans of the GL character have stuck with the characters and know which ones are which and who is the most popular among the top three Corps – John Stewart, Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner, each battling a different demon within themselves and a different evil within the world.
